Star in Your Own Movie!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__-7tpK_1wc

Our experienced IEI teacher Melinda White, of Kihei Charter School, has just finished her first major movie production!  Of course, she built the movie (it runs five minutes) around her class lesson on Photovoltaic Energy, but she gives a good overview of energy and life on the islands at the same time.  Nice job, Melinda, and Roll Credits!

Connecting in Oahu: IEI on the road again!

Here's our IEI team on another visit to Oahu--thanks for program friends like Anna Romano, Charles Wang, and Sam Nichols who can share renewable energy ideas with our workshop teachers.

Cool Example of Teacher Website

Our IEI graduate Carolyn Bush has been generous in sharing her classroom website, which even has a tab for Island Energy Inquiry lessons and activities.  What a nice review for her students and families, and what lucky Hawaii students to have such a creative teacher!  Here's the link:

Develop in your profession--and help our students seek clean energy

This past year, we helped 34 teachers attain Department of Education professional development credits, and we also have 16 more candidates working on their PD lessons.  It's fun to see how they've expanded their teaching through Island Energy Inquiry.

A local favorite friend of Island Energy Inquiry: Makai Ocean Engineering

Teachers of Island Energy Inquiry, our Oahu-based colleagues Makai Ocean Engineering will be making important presentations on advances in OTEC energy.  Let's wish them the best in spreading the news about Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion!

Makai to present three OTEC projects at a clean energy conference in September in Honolulu –

 For Immediate Release

Makai Ocean Engineering, Inc. is confirmed to do a presentation on three important aspects of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) technology at an upcoming conference in Honolulu, Hawaii, September 9–11. The conference, called the Asia Pacific Clean Energy Summit, has a special OTEC Symposium portion, which is being organized by the USA’s NOAA and its Korean counterpart, KIOST. The symposium will feature presentations and exhibits by Makai and other OTEC specialists from around the world.

Linking energies on-line!

Teachers...here's a great way to have your students experiment on-line with the Law of Conservation of Energy.  They select energy pathways and try them out.  It's fun!

We tried this site during recent IEI workshops, and it was a big hit with teachers.  You'll like the sound effects!

Lab simulations are easy with iPads

We're modeling a wind farm with 12 turbines, 2.5 megawatts each, to change wind speed as our independent variable.  The dependent variable?  Power output for the farm.  This is IEI's Clean Energy App, available to our course graduates.

Maui IEI Workshop: In a word, lively!

IEI attendees are used to Graham DeVey's spontaneous displays of kinetic energy.

Farming Maui's Winds

Inquiring in Oahu

Island Energy Inquiry team member Denissa Andrade leads our Oahu teacher in Photovoltaic (PV) Inquiry on Thursday.  Our teachers had a busy two days...along with running through five lab activities, they met with Hawaii professionals in Energy Audit, OTEC, Algal Biofuels, and Wind Turbine technologies.  Ready to launch in our Hawaii classrooms!

A big mahalo to our awesome Hawaii Island IEI teachers for participating in our workshop. We look forward to hearing about your implementation of the curriculum . Also, thank you to our guest speakers Michael Kaleikini, Kelly King, and Jenna Long. Your presentations were highly informational and relevant to the energy issues of the state and Hawaii Island. What a great weekend!
